Background

CNN en Español launched on March 17, 1997, becoming one of the first 24-hour Spanish-language cable news channels in the Americas, building on CNN's earlier Spanish-language segments that date to 1988. Production centered in Miami, with additional bureaus in Buenos Aires, Mexico City, and Havana. The channel passed through multiple corporate parents: Turner Broadcasting merged into Time Warner in 1996, AT&T acquired Time Warner in 2018 to form WarnerMedia, and in April 2022 WarnerMedia merged with Discovery Inc. to create the current parent, Warner Bros. Discovery. In January 2025, CNN announced roughly 200 layoffs—about 6 percent of its global workforce—as part of a broader shift from linear television toward digital and streaming platforms. In May 2026, CNN en Español rebranded with a refreshed visual identity and sharpened its multiplatform strategy, placing new emphasis on U.S. Hispanic audiences while maintaining a Latin American footprint; it simultaneously relaunched its FAST channel as CNN Noticias. A proposed takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount Skydance—valued at roughly $111 billion including debt—was approved by WBD shareholders and the Trump administration's DOJ in spring 2026, but state attorneys general lawsuits have delayed closing until at least June 2027. Like its parent CNN, CNN en Español is rated center-left by major media-bias trackers, with editorial coverage that has consistently scrutinized Trump administration policies on immigration, tariffs, and U.S.–Latin America relations.
