Background

CNN (Cable News Network) was founded on June 1, 1980, by media entrepreneur Ted Turner — who died in May 2026 at age 87 — as the world's first 24-hour cable news network. Critics initially dismissed the concept, but CNN's live coverage from Baghdad during the 1991 Gulf War established it as the dominant global breaking-news outlet of its era. Turner Broadcasting was sold to Time Warner in 1996 for $7.5 billion, and CNN remained under Time Warner through AT&T's 2018 acquisition, which created WarnerMedia. In 2022, WarnerMedia was spun off from AT&T and merged with Discovery, Inc. to form Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN's current parent. CNN has faced sustained criticism from the political right over perceived liberal bias and has been a persistent target of Trump administration rhetoric; it has also drawn criticism from the left at times for chasing access and false balance. A high-profile attempt to shift the network toward the center under CEO Chris Licht (2022–2023) collapsed after internal turmoil and negative press, and Licht was ousted. CEO Mark Thompson, who took over in late 2023, has focused on a digital subscription pivot. As of mid-2026, WBD has agreed to be acquired by Paramount — concerns have been raised by press-freedom groups that the deal could expose CNN to pressure from Skydance's business relationships and from a Trump-friendly media environment.
