Background
Time was co-founded in New York City on March 3, 1923, by Henry Luce and Briton Hadden as a weekly digest of news aimed at busy professionals — a novel format at the time. After Hadden's death in 1929, Luce took sole control and expanded the brand into a major publishing empire; the magazine's politics broadly reflected Luce's own moderately conservative internationalism for decades. Time Inc. eventually merged with Warner Communications in 1990 to form Time Warner, and through subsequent corporate restructurings it landed inside Meredith Corporation when Meredith acquired the Time Inc. magazine portfolio in 2018. Just months later, Meredith sold the Time masthead itself to Salesforce co-founder Marc Benioff and his wife Lynne for $190 million, separating the brand from Meredith's other holdings. Jessica Sibley became CEO in 2022 and steered the company toward B2B revenue streams, dropping the online paywall in June 2023. In late 2024, reports emerged that Benioff was in talks to sell Time to the Greek media company Antenna Group for roughly $150 million; one outlet reported the sale as completed, but no formal confirmation was publicly established as of July 2026. Media-bias trackers rate Time as center-left to lean-left, and its second-term Trump coverage has been broadly critical.
