Background
The paper was founded on July 5, 1935, by Daniel Victor Meekins and his wife Catherine Deaton Meekins as the Dare County Times in Manteo, North Carolina. Meekins renamed it The Coastland Times in 1947, and during World War II paper and labor shortages, he merged several of his other coastal North Carolina publications into it. After Meekins died in 1964, his family continued running the paper; son Francis Warren Meekins served as editor and general manager through 2005, and the Meekins family retained ownership until selling it to Outer Banks Newsmedia, LLC in December 2017. Outer Banks Newsmedia is a North Carolina affiliate of Boone Newsmedia, Inc. (founded 1970), which owns or manages more than 70 community papers across the American South and Midwest and is controlled by the Boone family following founder Jim Boone's death in February 2023. Boone Newsmedia papers are generally characterized as locally focused and community-oriented, without a documented partisan national editorial line. The Coastland Times has a printed circulation of approximately 5,000 copies and no notable editorial controversies have been widely reported. Its opinion section reflects the paper's community identity, addressing coastal environmental issues, local government, tourism, and Outer Banks life far more than national political debates.
