Background

CoinDesk was founded in 2013 by entrepreneur Shakil Khan as one of the first news outlets dedicated to Bitcoin and cryptocurrency. In 2016, Digital Currency Group (DCG), a major crypto conglomerate led by Barry Silbert, acquired it for roughly $500,000–$600,000. Under DCG, CoinDesk expanded into a leading crypto media brand and developed the Consensus conference, one of the industry's largest annual gatherings. In November 2022, CoinDesk reporter Ian Allison broke the story revealing that FTX's affiliated trading firm Alameda Research held large amounts of FTX's own exchange token, triggering a market panic that ended in FTX's bankruptcy — considered one of the most consequential financial scoops in crypto history. After DCG faced financial strain partly linked to FTX's collapse, it sold CoinDesk; in November 2023, Bullish Global, a crypto exchange, acquired CoinDesk in an all-cash deal, with management pledging editorial independence. Bullish installed former Wall Street Journal editor Matt Murray as editorial chair, but in December 2024 Bullish removed a published article about Tron founder Justin Sun after Sun's representatives complained; Murray resigned in protest, and three senior editors — including editor-in-chief Kevin Reynolds — were fired days later. Staff wrote an open letter to Bullish leadership warning that the newsroom's autonomy had been compromised by the owner's industry relationships. CoinDesk continues to cover digital assets from an insider perspective while drawing advertising and sponsorship revenue from many companies it also reports on.
