Background
Colombia Reports was launched in March 2008 by Dutch journalist Adriaan Alsema and is based in Medellín, Colombia. It was created to fill a gap in English-language reporting on Colombian news, politics, human rights, and security. In February 2014, the outlet took angel funding from Colombian investment firm GITP Ventures to expand its operations, but the partnership ended in February 2016 when Alsema wrote publicly that commercial investors created inherent conflicts with independent journalism. Since then, the outlet has operated as a nonprofit funded by reader donations. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it left-center, noting that its sourcing is sometimes limited and article citations are inconsistently linked. Colombia Reports has covered topics such as the FARC peace process, political corruption, paramilitary violence, and media concentration in Colombia — often from a perspective sympathetic to human rights and critical of elite power structures. Alsema has written transparently about the outlet's own potential biases, including a 2016 editorial acknowledging its vested interest in the FARC peace deal. The outlet remains a small, independently operated publication with Alsema as its primary editor and contributor.
