Background

Founded in 1873, the paper merged with the Colorado Springs Evening Telegraph in 1946 to become the Gazette-Telegraph and was purchased that year by Raymond Hoiles's Freedom Newspapers, a libertarian-leaning chain. It later reverted to The Gazette name and changed hands several times before Clarity Media Group, owned by Phil Anschutz, bought it in 2012. Anschutz, a major Republican donor, also owns the conservative Washington Examiner and launched the Denver Gazette in 2020, with editorial and some news content shared across the Anschutz-owned Colorado outlets. Media Bias/Fact Check rates the paper's editorial positions as right-of-center, and it has drawn criticism from Colorado media observers for a consistent conservative tilt in opinion pages and story selection, including reporting on an alleged pattern of spiking stories unfavorable to Republican interests. It remains one of the largest daily newspapers in Colorado Springs and a significant voice in El Paso County and statewide conservative politics.
