Background

The Colorado Sun launched in September 2018 after eight to ten journalists left The Denver Post in protest of deep layoffs imposed by the paper's hedge-fund owner, Alden Global Capital. It began with seed funding from the blockchain-journalism venture Civil and a Kickstarter campaign, then shifted to a subscription- and grant-supported model. In 2021 it partnered with the newly formed National Trust for Local News to acquire Colorado Community Media, a chain of two dozen suburban weeklies, though the Sun later returned its shares in that venture. In November 2023 the Sun converted from a for-profit public benefit corporation into a fully employee-directed nonprofit, formalizing reader memberships and foundation grants as its main revenue base. It has built a reputation for in-depth, longform Colorado state-government and rural-affairs reporting and positions itself as nonpartisan, though its staff and editorial priorities reflect the mainstream, urban-professional journalism culture typical of former big-metro reporters. It has not been a major target of bias controversies, but media-bias trackers generally rate it as left-leaning in story selection while noting factual reporting standards.
