Background

The Committee to Abolish Sport Hunting was founded in 1976 by Luke A. Dommer, a New York-based animal rights activist who argued that sport hunting was cruel, ecologically counterproductive, and a violation of the rights of non-hunting citizens. Dommer led the organization until his death in August 1992. CASH operates as a program of Wildlife Watch, Inc., another nonprofit Dommer established. The organization is headquartered in New Paltz, New York, with a secondary presence in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Its primary publication, the C.A.S.H. Courier newsletter, has run for decades and gives a platform to people who have witnessed or been affected by hunting. Jim Robertson assumed the presidency in fall 2017. CASH's advocacy consistently argues that non-hunting taxpayers fund the majority of wildlife conservation while hunting-oriented agencies dominate wildlife management policy — a claim contested by hunting groups and many state wildlife agencies. The organization opposes all recreational hunting and has campaigned against specific practices such as dog hunting and bow hunting at game preserves. It aligns philosophically with the broader animal rights movement rather than the mainstream conservation movement, which generally accepts regulated hunting as a management tool.
