Background
Common Cause was founded nationally in 1970, and the North Carolina chapter became one of its more active state affiliates. Bob Phillips led the chapter from 2001 and retired in January 2026 after about 25 years. The group focuses on redistricting reform, voting access, campaign finance, ethics and government transparency. It has been a plaintiff in major North Carolina redistricting and voting-rights lawsuits, including a 2025 suit with the state NAACP and voters over a Republican-drawn congressional map. That suit argued the map targeted the state's "Black Belt" in retaliation against Black voters. Common Cause says it is nonpartisan and that it does not support or oppose candidates. In practice its sharpest criticism in recent years has been aimed at Republican-controlled legislative actions, such as the 2025 mid-decade redistricting push, which it called a "shameful scheme" to rig voting maps.
