Background

CCIA was founded in 1972 by companies challenging IBM's market dominance, and it has long promoted open markets, open systems and open networks. Over time its membership moved from computer and telecom firms to today's largest internet and platform companies. It is a not-for-profit trade association, and its members say they employ more than 1.6 million workers and invest more than $100 billion in research and development. It lobbies and files comments on antitrust and competition, privacy, intellectual property, intermediary liability, cybersecurity, AI, telecom and trade policy. Its positions track its members' interests, and it generally opposes platform liability rules, some competition and app-store regulation, and foreign digital regulation and taxes. Because Apple, Amazon, Google and Meta are members, critics note that it sometimes defends the companies against antitrust actions, such as the U.S. Justice Department's 2020 suit against Google. In the second Trump term, it has welcomed the administration's pushback on foreign digital services taxes and has issued policy recommendations to it, while still advocating for its members on tariffs, AI and trade matters. Its publications are press releases, policy filings, and research reports, and they should be read as industry advocacy rather than independent journalism. I could not independently check current leadership beyond President and CEO Matt Schruers, and I did not find a source for CCIA's detailed budget.
