The blog was started around 2009–2011 by a writer who goes by "Sundance" and has kept their real identity private. Some sources have named a specific person, but that claim is not well verified. It gained a readership during the Tea Party era and the 2013 George Zimmerman trial coverage, and grew a larger audience during the 2016 Trump campaign. Its best-known theme is the "Spygate" narrative, which holds that Obama-era intelligence and law-enforcement officials improperly targeted the Trump campaign. The site also promotes long-running claims about the Mueller probe and the FBI. Critics, including a 2018 Daily Beast profile, describe it as a source of conspiracy theories that spread into wider pro-Trump media. Supporters say it does detailed document-based research that mainstream outlets ignore. Its masthead now reads "The Last Refuge," while the domain is still theconservativetreehouse.com.
