Background

Corporate Watch was founded in 1996 in the UK as a not-for-profit research group dedicated to exposing the social and environmental harms of corporations and the capitalist system. From the outset it positioned itself as a resource for grassroots campaigners rather than a conventional news outlet, producing guides such as 'Investigating Companies: a Do-It-Yourself Handbook' to help activists research corporate structures. It is structured as a workers' co-operative — staff collectively own and govern the organization — and has no outside investors or parent company. Over the years its work expanded to cover immigration detention and deportation flights, private injunctions against protesters, housing for asylum seekers, and precarious labor. A notable output is 'Wreckers of the Earth,' a directory of London-based companies it characterizes as environmentally destructive, first published in 2020. The outlet registers as a press publication under IMPRESS, the UK's alternative press regulator, a status it gained in March 2024. Its explicitly anti-capitalist mission sets it apart from watchdog outlets that aim for neutrality: Corporate Watch openly advocates for 'radical social change' and frames corporations as inherently harmful rather than as institutions subject to case-by-case scrutiny.
