Background
Corrections1 launched in 2007 as an online community and information hub for corrections officers and administrators, modeled on the earlier Police1 platform for law enforcement. It was developed by Praetorian Digital, a San Francisco-based digital media company founded by Alex Ford that also operated Police1, FireRescue1, EMS1, and Gov1. In February 2019, Praetorian Digital merged with Lexipol — a policy-writing and compliance vendor that sells standardized policy manuals to public safety agencies — forming a combined entity that later rebranded its media properties as Lexipol Media Group. Critics have noted a structural tension in that merger: Corrections1 functions as an editorial platform while its parent company simultaneously sells policy products to the corrections agencies that the platform covers. GTCR, a Chicago private equity firm, became the majority owner of Lexipol in 2021, replacing the prior owner, The Riverside Company. Corrections1's revenue model relies primarily on advertising sold to vendors targeting corrections professionals, supplemented by Lexipol's subscription-based policy and training services.
