Background

The Cyprus Mail was founded on November 2, 1945, by Iacovos 'Jaco' Iacovides, initially as a two-page tabloid published under British colonial rule. Iacovides ran the paper until his death in 1988, after which his sons Kyriacos and Michalis continued the family ownership. For decades it served as Cyprus's primary English-language record, covering the island's turbulent history including the 1974 Turkish invasion and the ongoing division of the island. In 2019, Andreas Neocleous — founder of the prominent Cypriot law firm Andreas Neocleous & Co LLC — purchased the paper through Neo Cymed Publishing Limited. The acquisition drew scrutiny from the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), which noted that the paper subsequently removed from its website its own prior coverage of the 2017 bribery conviction of the Neocleous law firm and its then-owner Panayiotis Neocleous. Andreas Neocleous died in October 2021; his widow Amalia Neocleous became the sole shareholder. Independent media assessors rate the Cyprus Mail as factually reliable but editorially right-leaning, and it claims no affiliation with any Cypriot political party. Its coverage of U.S. policy under the Trump second term has been critical, particularly regarding tariffs and their economic impact on European and global trade.
