Markos Moulitsas started Daily Kos in 2002 as a personal blog, and it grew into one of the largest liberal political sites in the U.S. Its core feature is a community platform where registered users write and post 'diaries' alongside a staff of editors and writers. The site became a prominent force in the 'netroots' movement of the mid-2000s, helping to raise money and attention for Democratic candidates and for progressive campaigns. It is run as a for-profit company and remains under Moulitsas's control, with funding drawn from ads, reader support, and fundraising drives. In 2010 Daily Kos cut ties with the polling firm Research 2000 and sued it after statisticians concluded that the firm's results looked fabricated; the dispute damaged trust in those polls and led to a settlement. The site is openly partisan, mixing news aggregation, opinion, and activism, and it endorses and fundraises for Democrats. Its coverage of President Trump's second term, which began in January 2025, has been sharply critical, and it describes itself as reader-funded, independent, progressive media.
