Background

Daily Sabah launched on February 24, 2014, as the English-language international edition of the Turkish-language daily Sabah, which has published since 1985. It was explicitly founded to project Turkish government views abroad and to counter outlets associated with the Gülen movement, which was then a political rival of President Erdoğan. Sabah's parent, Turkuvaz Media Group, passed into the hands of the Kalyon Group — a construction and energy conglomerate that has received major government contracts — following a politically orchestrated consolidation of pro-government media around 2013. Despite being nominally private, Turkuvaz operates under close supervision by the Turkish Presidency, and local journalists and press-freedom monitors report that its outlets receive significant state advertising as a form of indirect subsidy. Foreign Policy described Daily Sabah as essentially composed of thinly veiled government press releases, and Der Spiegel characterized its output as Turkish-style propaganda; Media Bias/Fact Check rates it right-biased with mixed factual reporting. Academic researchers have categorized it alongside Yeni Şafak as a tactical instrument of the AKP's foreign-policy messaging. The outlet brands itself as independent but has never credibly separated its editorial judgments from official Turkish government positions.
