Background

The Dallas Express name originally belonged to a historically significant Black newspaper founded in 1892 by William E. King, which operated until the mid-1970s, advocating against lynching, segregation, and voter suppression. The current Dallas Express has no organizational connection to that paper; it launched in January 2021 as a digital news site, repurposing the historic name. Monty Bennett, founder and CEO of the hotel firm Ashford Inc. and a major donor to Donald Trump and Texas Republican candidates, is its publisher. Investigations by D Magazine (2021) and the Texas Observer (2021, 2024) found that the outlet functions more as an advocacy platform than an independent newsroom, with editorial values mirroring Heritage Foundation talking points. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it Right-biased with Mixed factual reporting and medium credibility as of October 2025. The Texas House of Representatives denied the outlet a press credential. The Texas Observer also reported alleged ties to the Metric Media conservative local-news network, which Bennett denied. The Dallas Weekly sued Bennett over coverage and defeated a libel counterclaim he filed. Coverage of the Trump administration's second term has consistently framed its immigration, border, and deregulation policies favorably.
