Background

Dawn was founded on October 26, 1941, in Delhi by Muhammad Ali Jinnah as a weekly newspaper and mouthpiece of the All-India Muslim League, advocating for the creation of Pakistan. It became a daily in 1942 and moved to Karachi after the 1947 partition, where it has been headquartered ever since. After Jinnah's death in 1948, ownership passed fully to the Haroon family following a protracted legal dispute, and the paper has remained in family hands ever since. Through the 1960s–1990s, Dawn was broadly conservative and pro-establishment, but it shifted to a more pro-democracy, civilian-supremacy editorial line in the mid-2000s. Its most significant controversy came in October 2016, when journalist Cyril Almeida reported on a classified civil-military meeting—an episode dubbed the 'Dawn Leaks'—that alleged civilian leaders had warned military chiefs about Pakistan's diplomatic isolation due to militant groups; the military pressured the government to investigate the newspaper and several officials resigned. Dawn has also faced financial pressure through periodic suspension of government advertising, most recently from the federal and Punjab governments in 2024–2025. Media watchdogs rate it center-left, with factual reporting and a tendency toward liberal, secular framing on issues of democracy, human rights, and civil-military relations.
