Background

The Decoder was launched in September 2022 by DEEP CONTENT GmbH, a Leipzig-based digital media company co-founded by Benjamin Danneberg. DEEP CONTENT also publishes the VR/AR outlet MIXED and the gaming publication SPACE4GAMES. In December 2023, heise Medien — Germany's largest technology publisher and parent of the long-established heise online — acquired a stake in DEEP CONTENT, formally integrating The Decoder into the heise group starting in January 2024. The publication targets an English-speaking global audience of AI researchers, developers, and business readers, with a parallel German-language edition (the-decoder.de) also under heise's KI Pro brand. Managing Editor Maximilian Schreiner has covered AI for nearly a decade; the editorial team has backgrounds in philosophy, electrical engineering, and mathematics. The publication presents itself as editorially independent from heise and advertiser influence, distinguishing clearly between paid and editorial content. It has not been the subject of notable editorial controversies, and its coverage reflects a European perspective on global AI development, including scrutiny of U.S. technology companies and policy.
