Dissenter
U.S. independent left / press-freedom advocacy
Background
The Dissenter traces its lineage to Firedoglake (FDL), a progressive blog founded by Jane Hamsher in the mid-2000s; The Dissenter began as an FDL blog covering the Bradley (later Chelsea) Manning and Julian Assange cases. When Firedoglake suspended operations in late 2014, its legacy was carried forward in 2015 by Shadowproof, a member-supported news site co-founded and managed by Kevin Gosztola. Gosztola later relaunched The Dissenter as a standalone, subscriber-funded newsletter (hosted on Substack) dedicated to whistleblower cases, press-freedom fights, and national-security prosecutions. Gosztola, also author of a book on the Assange prosecution, has built a reputation for close, sympathetic coverage of figures like Assange, Manning, Edward Snowden, and other leakers, drawing scrutiny from press-freedom groups such as Freedom of the Press Foundation, for which he has contributed. The outlet has no corporate parent, editorial board, or major institutional funder; it operates on a shoestring, reader-donation model typical of independent progressive media. Its perspective is explicitly advocacy-oriented — it frames itself as defending whistleblowers and journalists against government overreach — rather than presenting itself as a neutral wire service.
