Dow Jones Newswires
U.S. center, business/financial focus
Background
Dow Jones & Company was founded in 1882 by Charles Dow, Edward Jones, and Charles Bergstresser, initially distributing hand-written financial news bulletins to Wall Street subscribers. What would become Dow Jones Newswires grew out of those early wire services, eventually expanding internationally in 1967 to staff journalists in major financial centers across Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Australia. For most of the 20th century the company was controlled by the Bancroft family, heirs of Clarence Barron, who had acquired Dow Jones in 1902. In 2007, News Corporation, led by Rupert Murdoch, purchased Dow Jones for roughly $5.6 billion after more than 60 percent of voting shareholders approved the deal despite notable Bancroft family opposition. As a condition of the sale, an independent editorial oversight committee was established to safeguard the journalistic independence of Dow Jones news operations. Today, Dow Jones Newswires functions as the real-time wholesale arm of Dow Jones & Company, delivering thousands of stories a day to clients integrated into platforms such as the Bloomberg Terminal and LSEG. Because its primary audience is financial professionals reacting to market-moving information rather than a general political readership, its reporting centers on earnings, economic indicators, and regulatory decisions rather than opinion or partisan framing. The Wall Street Journal news section — part of the same Dow Jones editorial infrastructure — is independently rated 'Center' by AllSides, and both the Journal and Dow Jones rejected Trump Pentagon press restrictions in 2025, opting to forfeit press credentials rather than accept limits on reporting.
