Background

The Eastern Herald was launched in 2009 as an English-language, India-based online news publication, with its founder Muzaffar Ahmad Noori Bajwa also serving as editor-in-chief since inception. The outlet describes itself as 'India's first international news journal' and focuses on diplomacy, geopolitics, human rights, and international business. It is funded entirely by advertising and has no disclosed major investor or corporate backer. In 2019 the site suffered a severe DDoS attack that destroyed its server data, and earlier archives are preserved only through the Internet Archive. An analysis published by The Ukrainian Review, examining a sample day in May 2023, found that of 38 articles published, only five were unrelated to Russia, with eight citing Russian state outlet RIA Novosti and ten citing Kremlin officials or Russian government spokespersons directly. The analysis concluded the outlet consistently promotes Russian propaganda narratives — including framing the United States as prolonging the war in Ukraine and portraying Ukraine as a Western proxy — without presenting Ukrainian or Western counterpoints, which independent journalists consider a professional standards violation. No major independent media-rating organizations (Media Bias/Fact Check, AllSides, Ad Fontes) had issued a formal rating for the outlet as of mid-2026. The outlet's self-description as neutral and defender of free speech stands in contrast to external findings about its sourcing and editorial framing.
