Background

EdNC was co-founded in 2014 by Gerry Hancock and journalist-scholar Ferrel Guillory, launching publicly in January 2015 under the legal name Emerging Tar Heel Leaders, Inc. Guillory had a long career covering education policy in North Carolina, and Hancock brought civic-sector experience; together they positioned EdNC as a dedicated education-news nonprofit at a time when legacy newspapers were cutting their education beats. The outlet grew steadily through foundation support, later absorbing the NC Center for Public Policy Research. EdNC publishes news reporting, data analysis, and opinion pieces labeled 'Perspective,' and keeps all content free of charge, citing an equity rationale. Its staff are registered as unaffiliated voters, a practice the organization highlights to signal independence. Critics from the political right have questioned whether its emphasis on public school funding and equity signals a left-leaning orientation despite the nonpartisan self-label. During the Trump administration's second term (2025–present), EdNC has produced consistent critical coverage of federal education funding freezes, the halving of the Department of Education workforce, rollbacks of Title III grants for English learners, and related policy changes, framing these developments primarily through their impact on North Carolina public schools and students.
