Background

EdSource was founded in 1977 as a California education information organization. It began as a source of research and analysis for policymakers, and later grew into a full news operation. Louis Freedberg, a longtime journalist, led it as executive director from 2011 to 2021. Anne Vasquez served as CEO for about three years before stepping down in 2024. Deborah Clark, who previously worked at NPR and the PBS program California Connected, took over in January 2025 and is described as only its fifth CEO. Its funding comes mainly from philanthropy, so foundation priorities could shape which education topics get attention. It describes itself as nonpartisan and publishes news and commentary pieces from outside contributors, many of them education practitioners and researchers. Its coverage of the second Trump administration has mostly focused on matters such as federal funding, immigration enforcement near schools and changes at the U.S. Department of Education. I could not review its recent articles in detail, so this stance is an estimate, not a measured finding.
