EdSource
U.S. center-left
Background
EdSource was founded in 1977 by concerned parents and education advocates seeking to explain complicated school finance reform issues in California. For its first three decades, it operated primarily as a research and policy analysis organization rather than a news outlet. In 2012 it launched EdSource Today, a full journalism arm, and has since grown into the largest education-focused newsroom in California, with reporters covering pre-K through higher education. It is based in Oakland and is a member of the Institute for Nonprofit News, adhering to that body's standards for editorial independence, including a stated firewall between funders and editorial decisions. The organization is sustained by dozens of foundations and individuals rather than advertising or subscriptions, which gives its funders — largely progressive-leaning philanthropies — indirect influence over its general coverage priorities. EdSource's journalism consistently foregrounds equity, access, and adequacy of public education funding, perspectives that align broadly with center-left education policy positions. Coverage of the Trump administration's second term has focused heavily on the harmful effects of proposed budget cuts, frozen grants, and rollbacks of DEI programs, with little sympathetic framing of administration rationales.
