El Faro is an independent, digitally native investigative news outlet founded in El Salvador in 1998 and now legally registered in Costa Rica after sustained pressure from the Bukele government. It is funded mainly by international foundation grants and built its reputation on adversarial reporting about corruption, gang violence, and authoritarian governance. Its opinion and editorial coverage has been critical of the Trump administration's immigration enforcement and its alignment with Bukele.
