Background

El Financiero was founded on October 15, 1981, by Rogelio Cárdenas Sarmiento, making it Mexico's first dedicated daily financial newspaper. In the late 1980s and early 1990s it was regarded as one of only two genuinely independent dailies in Mexico City, alongside La Jornada; it reported on fraud in the disputed 1988 presidential election and subsequently faced advertising boycotts by state-owned banks under the Salinas de Gortari administration. That record of editorial independence gave it credibility as a business paper willing to challenge power. In 2012, Grupo Multimedia Lauman acquired the paper for roughly $5 million USD and 300 million pesos, shifting its ownership into the hands of a private Mexican media conglomerate. Under Lauman the paper expanded its digital presence and struck a partnership with Bloomberg, creating a co-branded print section, a bilingual digital hub, and an HD television channel that blends Bloomberg's global financial reporting with locally produced content for Mexico and Central America.
