Background

Engadget was founded on March 2, 2004, by Peter Rojas, a former Gizmodo editor, as part of the Weblogs, Inc. blog network. AOL purchased Weblogs, Inc. in October 2005 for roughly $25 million, bringing Engadget into a major corporate structure for the first time. AOL was itself acquired by Verizon in 2015, and in 2017 Verizon merged AOL and Yahoo into a combined division called Oath (later renamed Verizon Media). Apollo Global Management acquired Verizon Media in 2021 and rebranded it as Yahoo, keeping Engadget within that portfolio. In February 2024, Engadget laid off approximately one-third of its editorial staff — including longtime editor-in-chief Dana Wollman — and shifted its focus toward SEO-driven content and affiliate commerce revenue. Yahoo announced the sale of Engadget to Static Media in early March 2026; Static Media formally completed the acquisition on April 30, 2026, adding it to a portfolio that includes SlashGear, BGR, Jalopnik, and TVLine. Media Bias/Fact Check rates Engadget as factually reliable with a left-of-center lean on political topics, though day-to-day coverage is primarily product reviews and tech news rather than political commentary.
