Background

Engineering News-Record traces its origins to two separate 19th-century trade journals: Engineering News, founded in 1874, and Engineering Record, founded in 1877. Both publications were absorbed by competing publishing houses — Hill Publishing Company and McGraw Publishing Company, respectively — before James H. McGraw merged the two firms in 1917 and launched the combined Engineering News-Record on April 5 of that year. The magazine operated under McGraw-Hill for nearly a century, becoming an authoritative voice sometimes called the 'bible' of the construction industry. In 2014, McGraw-Hill sold its construction data division — which included ENR — to Symphony Technology Group, and the division was rebranded Dodge Data & Analytics. The following year, in July 2015, Dodge sold ENR and Architectural Record to BNP Media, where it remains today. BNP Media, founded in 1926 and still family-run, is a purely commercial B2B publisher with no known ideological agenda. ENR publishes weekly news, cost indexes, project data, and rankings such as the Top 400 Contractors list, and reaches an estimated 440,000 readers monthly. Coverage of the second Trump term has focused squarely on industry effects: reporting has tracked tariff-driven cost increases in steel and other materials, documented construction-spending slowdowns, and analyzed infrastructure funding uncertainty — reflecting a pragmatic, sector-interest editorial frame rather than a political one.
