Background

Enlace Latino NC launched in September 2018 as North Carolina's first nonprofit Spanish-language news outlet, operating initially under the fiscal sponsorship of El Centro Hispano before becoming an independent 501(c)(3) in 2022. Co-founders Paola Jaramillo and Walter Gómez built it to fill a gap in coverage for the state's growing Latino population, reporting on immigration, labor, health, and local politics. The outlet grew with support from journalism-focused foundations, notably a $1 million grant from the American Journalism Project that helped it become fully independent, along with funding from the NC Local News Lab Fund, Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, and Skyline Foundation. It has no significant print presence and relies on digital distribution, radio partnerships, and community outreach, including training thousands of volunteers for an ICE-activity alert hotline. Its journalism has been recognized in local and national press-freedom and community-journalism circles for serving an underreported audience. Given its mission and funding base, its coverage of immigration enforcement under the second Trump administration has leaned toward scrutinizing and documenting enforcement actions, generally framing stories around impacts on immigrant communities rather than defending administration policy.
