Background

ESPN was founded on September 7, 1979, by Bill Rasmussen, his son Scott Rasmussen, and Ed Egan, launching from Bristol, Connecticut, with initial backing from Getty Oil, which paid $10 million for an 85% stake. The network debuted with its flagship program SportsCenter and reached only about 1.4 million cable subscribers at launch. ABC invested in ESPN in 1984, and in 1996 The Walt Disney Company acquired Capital Cities/ABC — and with it, ESPN — in a landmark $19 billion deal. Disney has held an 80% stake alongside Hearst Communications' 20% for most of its corporate history. In January 2026, ESPN acquired NFL Network and related assets from NFL Enterprises LLC in exchange for a 10% noncontrolling stake in ESPN, reshaping the ownership split to approximately Disney 72%, Hearst 18%, NFL Enterprises 10%. ESPN launched its own standalone direct-to-consumer streaming service in August 2025, branded ESPN Unlimited, marking a major shift away from reliance on traditional cable carriage. Over the years ESPN has faced criticism — mainly from conservative commentators — for permitting on-air talent to weigh in on social and racial justice issues; the network responded by restricting anchors from expressing political opinions on the air, though outside analysts continue to rate its output as mildly left-of-center on social topics.
