Background

Euromaidan Press launched in January 2014, founded by Canadian analyst Mat Babiak and Kyiv-based activist Alya Shandra as a volunteer effort to translate and report Ukrainian news in English during the Euromaidan protests against President Viktor Yanukovych. After Babiak departed in 2015, Shandra became editor-in-chief and head of the board of the registered Ukrainian NGO. The outlet grew substantially after Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the outbreak of conflict in eastern Ukraine, positioning itself explicitly as a counter to Russian state media narratives. Funding comes from reader contributions and the International Renaissance Foundation, an Open Society Foundations affiliate funded by George Soros; past funders have included the British Embassy Kyiv and the National Democratic Institute. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it Left-Center in orientation and High for factual accuracy, noting that reviewed content was uniformly pro-Ukrainian in framing while occasionally including Russian perspectives for context. Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022 sharply intensified the outlet's focus on battlefield developments, war crimes documentation, and Western policy debates. Coverage of the Trump administration's second term — including reported pressure on Ukraine to cede the Donbas region, proposals to end NATO funding, and diplomatic overtures toward Moscow — has been consistently and sharply critical.
