Background

Everytown for Gun Safety was formed in April 2014 through the merger of two advocacy groups: Mayors Against Illegal Guns, co-founded in 2006 by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, which Shannon Watts launched in the days after the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Bloomberg pledged roughly $50 million at Everytown's founding to build a national counterweight to the National Rifle Association. The organization operates through two nonprofit arms: a 501(c)(3) support fund focused on research and education, and a 501(c)(4) action fund that lobbies legislators and spends in elections; in the 2024 cycle it reported over $7.4 million in contributions and more than $7.4 million in outside political spending. Everytown publishes gun-violence data and policy analysis under its Everytown Research & Policy arm; critics on the right have periodically contested its statistical framing, while the organization defends its methodology. It has endorsed Democratic presidential candidates and backed state ballot initiatives on background checks and red-flag laws. Since January 2025, Everytown has maintained a running public tracker of Trump administration gun-policy actions and has repeatedly condemned administration moves to reduce ATF enforcement capacity, roll back Biden-era regulations on ghost guns and pistol braces, and ease firearms restrictions on people with felony convictions.
