Background

Everytown for Gun Safety was formed in 2013-2014 by combining Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Mayors Against Illegal Guns was co-founded in 2006 by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, along with other mayors. Moms Demand Action began after the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Bloomberg committed $50 million at the launch, and he remains its largest funder. Everytown works through lobbying in state capitols, litigation, public education and research, and election spending through affiliated political groups. It pushes for measures such as universal background checks, red-flag laws and limits on firearm access, and it supports candidates who back them. Critics, such as the conservative Capital Research Center, describe it as a billionaire-driven political operation. Supporters describe it as a large grassroots movement. Its published research and framing reflect a clear pro-gun-control perspective, so its material should be read as advocacy rather than neutral reporting.
