Background

Founded on April 12, 2010, in Karachi by Sultan Ali Lakhani, the Express Tribune launched with a partnership to distribute the International New York Times (formerly International Herald Tribune) alongside its own reporting, making it Pakistan's only internationally affiliated English-language paper at the time; that content-sharing arrangement later lapsed. It is part of the broader Express Media Group, which also runs the Urdu-language Daily Express and Express News television channel, all owned by the Lakson Group conglomerate run by the Lakhani family. The paper has described its editorial identity as broadly liberal and secular, aiming to counter extremism and promote youth engagement, and independent monitors such as Media Bias/Fact Check and Ground News have rated it as low-bias and mostly factual by regional standards. It has faced controversy over self-censorship, including redacting or omitting NYT wire content deemed sensitive for Pakistani audiences, and its journalists have at times faced threats and violence, reflecting the broader risks of operating in Pakistan's press environment. Like most major Pakistani outlets, it operates under implicit pressures from the military and government establishment, which shapes coverage of sensitive security and political topics. Its foreign-affairs coverage, including of the U.S., tends to track Pakistan's official diplomatic posture, which in 2025–2026 has grown notably warmer toward the Trump administration amid mediation efforts on India-Pakistan tensions and Iran-U.S. talks.
