Background

FactCheck.org was founded in 2003 by veteran journalist Brooks Jackson as a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center (APPC), itself established in 1993 by philanthropist Walter Annenberg. It was one of the first dedicated political fact-checking sites in the U.S. and became a model for the format, later training and partnering with other fact-checkers, including work feeding into Meta's third-party fact-checking program before Meta discontinued that U.S. program in 2025. The site is run by professional journalists and academics rather than a media conglomerate, and its funding structure — an academic endowment plus foundation grants and small donor gifts, with a stated policy against corporate, union, or advocacy money — sets it apart from commercially or politically owned outlets. It has drawn periodic criticism from both left and right: conservative critics have accused it of applying more scrutiny to Republican claims, while some progressive critics have said its "he said, she said" framing sometimes understates asymmetries between the parties' factual accuracy.
