Background

FOCAL POINTS originated in October 2022 under the brand Courageous Discourse, launched on Substack by Dr. Peter A. McCullough after he became one of the most prominent medical voices opposing COVID-19 vaccine mandates and official pandemic guidance. McCullough's public positions led to the loss of academic appointments at Texas A&M College of Medicine, Texas Christian University, and the University of North Texas Health Science Center, all of which cited misinformation concerns. Baylor Scott & White Health separately obtained a temporary restraining order against him after he allegedly continued claiming an institutional affiliation he had agreed to relinquish. International fact-checking organizations including AFP have repeatedly debunked specific claims McCullough has made about vaccine safety. Despite those controversies, the Substack grew to hundreds of thousands of paid and free subscribers. Author John Leake joined as a co-writer and the outlet later expanded its web presence from petermcculloughmd.substack.com to its own domain, thefocalpoints.com, adding contributor Nicolas Hulscher and broadening its editorial scope to food dyes, fluoride, chronic disease, and general public policy. McCullough has informally advised RFK Jr.'s MAHA initiative within the Trump administration and the publication has documented and generally applauded those efforts, while grading the administration's health record critically when it falls short of the outlet's expectations.
