Background

The Food Institute was founded in 1928 by Seattle food broker Gordon C. Corbaley, who began distributing market bulletins under the name 'The News From Oregon and Washington' to help buyers and sellers in the canning trade stay better informed. It later incorporated as the American Institute of Food Distribution and settled in the New York/New Jersey metro area. For most of its history it operated as a nonprofit, publishing subscription newsletters and research tools for food industry decision-makers — a model largely unchanged for decades. Beginning in January 2021, the Gellert family made a strategic equity investment to fund technology upgrades and staff growth, with a second investment round in March 2022 to expand digital content and multimedia offerings. In March 2026 the outlet acquired food and beverage podcast assets from Heritage Radio Network, broadening its multimedia platform. The publication's editorial output — daily email newsletters, weekly reports, webinars, data tools, and a growing podcast library — is aimed at owners, CEOs, purchasing managers, and other food industry professionals. Its coverage of the Trump administration has been practical and industry-centric, examining the business effects of tariffs, USDA staffing cuts, dietary guideline changes, and SNAP reforms without advocating for or against the administration's broader agenda.
