Background
WJBK signed on October 24, 1948, as Detroit's third television station, initially affiliated with CBS and carrying secondary Dumont programming. It remained a CBS affiliate for approximately 45 years, owned at various times by Storer Broadcasting and other broadcast groups. In May 1994, Fox's parent News Corporation made a major investment in New World Communications — the station's then-owner — tied to Fox's acquisition of NFL NFC broadcast rights; as a condition, New World agreed to flip most of its stations to the Fox network. WJBK switched from CBS to Fox on December 11, 1994, ending one of the longest continuous network affiliations in Detroit television history. Fox Television Stations formally acquired WJBK outright from New World in January 1997, making it a Fox owned-and-operated (O&O) station. Today it is one of roughly 17 Fox-owned local television stations and is part of Fox Corporation, which emerged in 2019 after Disney purchased most of 21st Century Fox's entertainment assets.
