Background

WJBK signed on October 24, 1948, as a CBS and DuMont affiliate owned by Storer Broadcasting. Storer sold it in 1985 to KKR, and Gillett Communications bought it in 1987. It later became part of SCI Television. New World Communications bought it in 1993. In 1994 New World signed a group deal with Fox, and WJBK dropped CBS to become a Fox affiliate. News Corporation bought New World in 1997, and the station became a Fox owned-and-operated station. It is now part of Fox Corporation, which was created in 2019 after Disney bought most of 21st Century Fox. The newsroom is run locally and focuses on crime, weather, and community issues. Its national and political programming comes from the Fox network, which has a conservative-leaning opinion lineup. Media-bias raters generally describe the station's local news as closer to the center than the network's cable channel. Like other local stations, it can still show the influence of corporate ownership in what it chooses to cover.
