Background
The station signed on January 9, 1955, as KEYD-TV, initially affiliated with the short-lived DuMont Television Network and owned by the Family Broadcasting Corporation. After DuMont collapsed in 1956, it operated as an independent for several years before becoming an ABC affiliate in 1961. It dropped the ABC affiliation in 1979 and returned to independent status. In 1959, 20th Century-Fox acquired the station, and it became one of the original charter affiliates of the newly launched Fox network in October 1986—though a programming dispute caused it to drop that affiliation by 1988 and go independent again. It affiliated with UPN from 1995 to 2002, then became a full Fox owned-and-operated station, adopting the FOX 9 brand. Today it is part of Fox Television Stations, a group of roughly 30 stations under Fox Corporation. Unlike the Fox News Channel—a cable opinion network also under Fox Corporation—FOX 9 operates as a conventional local broadcast news outlet. Media Bias/Fact Check (updated March 2025) rates it 'Least Biased' with 'High' factual reporting, and AllSides assigns a 'Center' rating, reflecting that local news operations in this group tend to follow professional journalism norms rather than the ideological framework of Fox News.
