Background

Fox News Channel launched on October 7, 1996, founded by Rupert Murdoch with Republican political strategist Roger Ailes as its first chairman and CEO. It positioned itself as a conservative alternative to what Murdoch and Ailes described as a liberal media establishment, and quickly became the most-watched U.S. cable news channel. Fox Business Network launched in October 2007 as a direct competitor to CNBC, emphasizing markets and business news from a free-market perspective. Ailes was forced out in July 2016 after multiple female employees, including anchors Gretchen Carlson and Megyn Kelly, publicly accused him of sexual harassment; he died in 2017. In 2019, Fox Corporation was spun off as a standalone public company after Murdoch sold most of 21st Century Fox's entertainment assets to The Walt Disney Company. In April 2023, Fox settled a defamation lawsuit filed by Dominion Voting Systems for $787.5 million—the largest publicly known media defamation settlement in U.S. history—after internal documents revealed that Fox hosts and executives privately doubted the 2020 election-fraud claims they continued to broadcast. A September 2025 family trust settlement gave Lachlan Murdoch sole voting control of Fox Corporation. Media bias organizations AllSides and Media Bias/Fact Check consistently rate Fox News as right-leaning, with opinion programming described as frequently partisan and prone to disputed factual claims.
