Background

Fox News Channel was launched on October 7, 1996, by Rupert Murdoch, who recruited Republican political consultant Roger Ailes as its founding CEO and president. It was built as an explicit conservative alternative to broadcast network news, which many Republicans viewed as biased toward the left. Under Ailes, it grew into the dominant cable news network in the United States, pairing a daytime news operation with heavily opinion-driven prime-time programming from hosts such as Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Tucker Carlson. Ailes resigned in July 2016 after multiple former employees filed sexual harassment allegations against him; Fox's parent company settled related suits for tens of millions of dollars. The network became closely aligned with Donald Trump's 2016 campaign and first term, though the relationship was turbulent at times. In April 2023, Fox settled a major defamation lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems for $787.5 million after court filings revealed that on-air hosts and executives privately expressed doubt about the 2020 election-fraud claims they were amplifying on air. A 2025 settlement of an internal Murdoch family trust dispute confirmed Lachlan Murdoch's sole voting control of Fox Corporation through at least 2050. Independent evaluators including AllSides and Media Bias/Fact Check consistently rate Fox News as right-leaning, with particular concerns raised about factual reliability in opinion-format programming.
