Background

Fox News Channel launched in 1996 under Rupert Murdoch and founding CEO Roger Ailes, built around an appeal to conservative viewers who felt underserved by other networks; it became the top-rated U.S. cable news channel by the early 2000s and has largely held that position since. The network has weathered major controversies, including a wave of sexual harassment allegations that led to Ailes' 2016 ouster and later Bill O'Reilly's departure, and a 2023 defamation suit by Dominion Voting Systems over false 2020 election-fraud claims aired by Fox hosts, which Fox settled for $787.5 million without admitting wrongdoing; internal court filings showed many hosts and executives privately doubted the fraud claims even as they aired them. In 2025, a family trust settlement consolidated voting control of Fox Corporation under Lachlan Murdoch.
