Background
Fox News Channel launched on October 7, 1996, founded by Australian-American media mogul Rupert Murdoch and built under the direction of founding CEO Roger Ailes, a former Republican media consultant. It was explicitly positioned to counter what Murdoch and Ailes saw as a liberal bias in established broadcast news, and it rapidly grew into the dominant U.S. cable news network during the late 1990s and 2000s. Roger Ailes resigned in July 2016 after multiple sexual harassment allegations and died in May 2017; Fox News paid tens of millions of dollars in settlements related to workplace misconduct under his tenure. The network's original slogan, 'Fair and Balanced,' was dropped in 2017. In 2021, Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic each filed major defamation lawsuits alleging Fox hosts and guests knowingly spread false claims about rigged voting machines after the 2020 election; Fox settled with Dominion in April 2023 for $787.5 million. Rupert Murdoch retired in September 2023, handing control to his son Lachlan, who consolidated sole voting authority over the Murdoch family trust in a court-approved settlement in September 2025. Academic researchers, journalists, and media watchdogs have consistently characterized Fox News as favoring the Republican Party in its coverage and as having spread misleading content on topics including climate change and COVID-19. In June 2026, Fox Corporation announced a $22 billion deal to acquire streaming platform Roku.
