Background
KTVI traces its roots to August 1953, when Signal Hill Telecasting Corporation launched a UHF station in the St. Louis market. The station moved to VHF channel 2 in 1957 and adopted the KTVI call letters, which it has held ever since. For several decades it was owned by the Newhouse newspaper chain, then passed to the Los Angeles-based Times Mirror Company in 1980 and later to Argyle Television in 1993. In 1994 it switched its network affiliation to Fox, and in 1997 News Corporation completed its acquisition of New World Communications, making KTVI a Fox Corporation-owned station. Fox sold the station to Local TV, LLC in 2008; Tribune Broadcasting then acquired it in 2013 as part of a group purchase of 19 Local TV stations. When Nexstar Media Group bought Tribune Media in 2019 for roughly $6.4 billion, KTVI became part of Nexstar's portfolio of approximately 200 stations nationwide, with Nexstar formally taking over St. Louis operations in 2020. KTVI shares studios in Maryland Heights, Missouri, with sister CW affiliate KPLR-TV (channel 11). Nexstar's own PAC has historically split political donations with a slight Republican lean in some election cycles, but independent analysts have not flagged KTVI's local newsroom for systematic partisan slant; Media Bias/Fact Check rated it 'Least Biased' with high factual reporting as of 2025.
