Background

KVVU signed on September 10, 1967, as Nevada's first independent television station, broadcasting under the call letters KHBV-TV from a repurposed gas station along Henderson's Boulder Highway. Ownership passed through several hands — including a period under Carson Broadcasting, a company controlled by entertainer Johnny Carson — before Meredith Corporation, a Des Moines-based media firm, purchased the station in 1985. KVVU became one of Fox's charter affiliates when the network launched in 1986, and it did not begin producing its own local newscasts until 1998. In 2021, Gray Television (now Gray Media) acquired KVVU along with 16 other Meredith stations in a $2.8 billion deal, making Gray one of the country's largest local broadcast owners with reach into roughly 37 percent of U.S. TV households. Gray Media is a publicly traded, ad-supported company with no single controlling political backer, and it does not direct affiliates to adopt a particular editorial line. As a local Fox affiliate, KVVU carries Fox network programming and NFL games but is editorially separate from the Fox News Channel cable outlet; independent raters at Media Bias/Fact Check and AllSides both place its news output near the center with high factual marks and no discernible partisan pattern.
