Background

France 24 launched in December 2006, an initiative pushed by President Jacques Chirac to give France an international broadcasting voice comparable to CNN, BBC World and Al Jazeera. It began as a joint venture between the state and private broadcasters TF1 and France Télévisions, but the French state took full ownership in 2008 by buying out the private partners' shares. In 2012 it was folded into the newly created holding company France Médias Monde alongside RFI and Monte Carlo Doualiya, which remains state-owned and receives its budget through French public broadcasting funding. Editorially, France 24 positions itself as an independent, France-based alternative to Anglo-American and Gulf-funded international broadcasters, and it has faced periodic criticism, including from foreign governments, over reporting on sensitive topics such as French domestic unrest, Africa policy, and geopolitical conflicts. Because it is state-funded, critics note it can face pressure or perceptions of alignment with French government foreign-policy positions, even though editorial staff describe day-to-day operations as independent from direct political control. Its coverage of U.S. politics under the second Trump administration has included investigative reporting on deportation policy and sympathetic coverage of U.S. outlets facing restricted White House access.
