Frontstretch
U.S. independent motorsports media
Background
Frontstretch was founded in 1998 by Butch Bellah, a former stand-up comedian who launched the site as a vehicle for humorous NASCAR commentary. Early contributors included webmaster Ren Jonsin and statistician Dennis Michelsen. Bellah stepped away in 2004, handing control to Jonsin. In 2009, Tom Bowles — then serving as Managing Editor while working in NASCAR television production for FOX, TNT, and ESPN — purchased the site and became majority owner and Editor-in-Chief. Under Bowles, Frontstretch expanded from a small fan-driven blog into one of the largest independent motorsports journalism sites in the country, growing to more than 40 staff writers and photographers. The site has won National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA) awards four times, more than any other independent outlet in the association. Coverage has broadened over the years beyond NASCAR to include IndyCar, Formula 1, ARCA, and sports car racing. The outlet does not cover politics as part of its editorial mission and has no documented ideological stance.
