Futurism
U.S. center-left (science and tech news with a skeptical, critical tone)
Background
Futurism was founded in 2017 by Alex Klokus and Jordan Lejuwaan. Singularity University, a tech-focused education and innovation organization, acquired it in 2019. Recurrent Ventures bought it in July 2021. Recurrent is a venture-backed company that has collected many small digital brands, such as Popular Science and The Drive. The site is known for its coverage of artificial intelligence, space, energy and health, often in a punchy, opinionated style with sharp headlines. Its reporting on the media's use of AI has drawn wide notice. In 2023 it exposed CNET's undisclosed AI-written articles. It also reported that Sports Illustrated had run product reviews under fake author names with AI-generated headshots, which came from a third-party vendor, AdVon Commerce. The Sports Illustrated reporting won a 2024 Mirror Award. In 2026 it has run many pieces critical of Trump administration policies, including NASA budget proposals, cuts to climate data and health agencies, deportation-driven population decline, and nuclear regulation changes. Its framing is often sardonic, so readers should expect commentary mixed into news items.
