Background

The outlet traces its roots to Gamasutra, a website launched in 1994 by Miller Freeman, Inc. to serve professional game developers alongside the print magazine also called Game Developer. Miller Freeman was acquired by UBM, and UBM was later acquired by the UK-based events and publishing giant Informa plc. The print magazine closed in 2013 as part of a broader UBM restructuring away from print. Gamasutra continued as a website and in August 2021 was rebranded as Game Developer, moving to the domain gamedeveloper.com; the editorial team cited the original name's outdated and sexually suggestive connotation as incompatible with its coverage of industry sexism and workplace culture. Informa subsequently merged its tech media assets with TechTarget, making Game Developer part of Informa TechTarget. The outlet is editorially independent from advertisers by stated policy, though it operates in close institutional proximity to GDC, which is also an Informa property. Its coverage tends to reflect progressive industry norms on topics such as diversity and worker conditions, and since 2025 it has reported critically on the effects of Trump-era tariffs and federal funding cuts on the game industry.
