Background
Jim Hoft founded The Gateway Pundit in 2004 as a conservative blog based in St. Louis, Missouri, and it grew into one of the most widely read far-right websites in the United States. The site built its audience by publishing sharply partisan commentary, breaking conservative movement news, and amplifying anti-establishment narratives. Fact-checkers and academic researchers have repeatedly documented the site's publication of falsehoods, hoaxes, and conspiracy theories, including debunked claims about Barack Obama's birthplace, the 2018 Parkland school shooting, and the integrity of the 2020 presidential election. The site's false accusations that Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Wandrea 'Shaye' Moss committed election fraud led to a defamation lawsuit filed in 2021. In April 2024, TGP Communications filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which a federal judge dismissed in July 2024 as a bad-faith filing intended to delay litigation; the defamation case settled out of court in October 2024 on undisclosed terms. Throughout Trump's second term, The Gateway Pundit has maintained strongly supportive coverage of the administration, amplifying its policies and statements to its conservative readership.
