Background

Founded in 1872 as Out West and relaunched in 1873 as The Colorado Springs Gazette, the paper merged with the Colorado Springs Evening Telegraph in 1946 to form the Gazette-Telegraph, then was bought that same year by R.C. Hoiles's libertarian-leaning Freedom Newspapers chain. It reverted to the name The Gazette in 1997. After Freedom Communications filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009, Philip Anschutz's Clarity Media Group purchased the paper in 2012, adding it to a stable of conservative-oriented outlets that also includes the Washington Examiner and The Oklahoman. Under Anschutz ownership, the Gazette's newsroom has maintained a reputation for solid factual reporting, while its editorial board has become known for consistently endorsing Republicans and taking positions sympathetic to Trump-aligned conservatism. Media watchdogs classify it as right-of-center, distinguishing its generally reliable news coverage from its more overtly partisan opinion section.
